Project Concept
Encompass follows the story of myself, Tyler Andrews, on a journey through space to earth in the year 4040. That landscape on earth is visualized from lush green landscapes to to a drastic change into disarray with an apocalyptic expression. Under the guidance of an AI system, I am able and willing to connect to 'the other-side' - a ever looming darkness that is encapsulating the earth encompassing the landscape. It is my mission to find an essence to be able to traverse into this darkness and to find that was where I was meant to be.
The concept bridges CGI , film and 3D assets into a movie that is 10 minutes in its entirety.
Goals
Pursuing Encompass I hope to gain technical knowledge in:
- 3D model making in Maya/Blender
- Environmental creation in Unreal Engine
- Texturing for all assets and landscapes
- Particle effects and volumetric fog
- Simulation of fire/smoke
- Lighting techniques
- Compositing
- Sound design / SFX
- Story telling (within film)
Environment
This baron landscape consists of a rugged mountain range with scattered rock and dead grass. The main motif of this scene is the main bridge-way, a custom 3D asset made in Maya. Volumetric fog sold the scene adding depth and atmosphere bringing together the light and landscape.
This custom 3D asset that I create in Maya serves the purpose of a transport avenue for the characters and to introduce a futuristic view of a post-apocalyptic future world, set on earth.
GRASS
After learning the techniques of how to render my own 3D grass, I further progressed into Megascans asset library and utilized their grass asset to fill in my lush environment. It was useful learning to make my own assets and how they work although using these pre-built assets, being painted with a brush, was more efficient to move on to the ease of use that is Megascans.
Movement to the camera and the subtle scratch overlay were created in after effects to give a sense that the viewer is in the scene and watching from some component in the landscape - (further development will be made to incorporate vehicles etc). In the final test render a vehicle is shown to cross the bridge that is in the focal point. This vehicle will be a standalone 3D asset that incorporates the DASHBOARD previously created in a separate project.

- Developing further assets such as the vehicle in the main scene
